ISO 9001:2026 published: prepare for change through your processes
ISO announced the publication of ISO 9001:2026 on 16 September 2026. According to the organisation, the new edition retains a familiar framework and introduces updates strengthening clarity, leadership, quality culture and ethical behaviour, as well as the treatment of risks and opportunities. Companies should start by understanding the changes and their effect on processes. Updating references in documents alone does not demonstrate that practices have been reviewed or that teams understand what they need to do.
As a preparation method, I recommend a gap analysis linking each relevant change to the affected process, its owner, existing evidence and the action required. This matrix should guide the work plan and team training.
Internal audits can test implementation through real situations: management decisions, complaints, supplier evaluation and monitoring of objectives. The aim is to understand whether the system supports decisions and improvement.
Certified organisations should confirm the applicable transition timetable and rules with their certification body. Publication of the standard and updating a certificate are separate steps; planning should reflect that distinction.
Practical next step: Discuss your organisation’s preparation and audit needs. Get in touch.
